About Veery
The veery is a forest thrush with an unusual gift: it sings two notes at once. Its song comes from two independent sides of the same voice box, working in concert. Separate lines. One sound unlike any other.
Veery is built on the belief that the best work happens when two capabilities operate together: the craft of communications and the leverage of AI. One does not replace the other. The value comes from knowing how to make them work in concert.
Understory
The veery lives in the understory—the dense layer beneath the forest canopy. It does its work below the surface. Veery is not built around noise, hacks, or bot farms. It is built around judgment, structure, and the kind of work that holds up when the scrutiny gets higher.
The 1:1 Principle
The veery’s unique song works because both voices belong to the same bird. That is our principle for working with AI.
If you ask AI to write, your team needs to know what good writing looks like. If you ask it to analyze, your team needs to understand the inputs, the reasoning, and the limits of the output. The tool can accelerate the work. It cannot replace the expertise required to shape it, evaluate it, and stand behind it.
We call that 1:1: every use of AI must be matched by human judgment and input. This is the difference between using AI as leverage and using it as a substitute for craft. One raises the standard. The other lowers it.
Origin
There is a family connection here. James’s mother started a design agency in the 90s called Nest Resources. After Nest comes a bird.
